Narrow slot canyon passage with towering walls along the Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch route

Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch

Buckskin Gulch is widely regarded as the longest continuous slot canyon in the world and one of the deepest, offering miles of narrow passageways beneath towering sandstone walls that create an astonishing sense of scale and stillness. Entering the canyon through Wire Pass is the most direct and dramatic way to experience it, delivering hikers quickly into the sculpted sandstone corridors that make this landscape so extraordinary.

Wire Pass itself is a beautiful slot canyon in its own right. The route begins across open desert before the canyon walls suddenly close in, leading through a series of narrow passages that twist and turn through the sandstone. A short ladder helps hikers descend a small drop before the canyon eventually opens at the confluence with Buckskin Gulch.

From there, the real magic begins. Towering canyon walls rise hundreds of feet overhead as Buckskin Gulch stretches away in both directions, forming a winding corridor of sculpted stone. The scale of the canyon can feel almost overwhelming at times, yet the quiet stillness of the narrow passageways creates a surprisingly intimate experience.

If I had to name one single favorite hike, this might be it. There simply is no better hike for someone who loves canyons.

Another excellent way to explore Buckskin Gulch is by starting at the Buckskin Trailhead, which saves four miles of rough driving and offers a longer approach suitable for someone looking for a quiet day of canyon wandering.

Things to Know

• Permit required: A day-use permit is required to hike Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch. It’s best to obtain your permit online in advance, as there is typically no cell service at the trailhead.

• Rough access road: The road to the Wire Pass trailhead is dirt and can become rough in places. Most vehicles can reach the trailhead in dry conditions, but after rain the road can become difficult or impassable.

• Short ladder in Wire Pass: A ladder helps hikers descend a short drop inside the slot canyon. Most hikers navigate it easily, but it can feel awkward for some people and for dogs.

• Petroglyph panel: Near the confluence with Buckskin Gulch you will find a panel of petroglyphs etched into the canyon wall. Please view respectfully and avoid touching or climbing on the rock.

• Flash flood danger: Like all slot canyons, Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch can become extremely dangerous during storms. Always check the weather forecast and avoid entering the canyon if rain is possible anywhere in the area.

• Mud and standing water: After storms, sections of Buckskin Gulch can become muddy or contain standing water and even quicksand, sometimes creating wet conditions for months.
