Intricate white and red sandstone formations with brain-like textures and swirling patterns at White Pocket

White Pocket

White Pocket is one of the most extraordinary sandstone landscapes in the Vermilion Cliffs region. Unlike nearby destinations that require hiking long distances to reach a specific viewpoint, White Pocket is a place meant to be explored slowly and freely, wandering across a surreal landscape of swirling sandstone, domes, ridges, and pockets of sculpted rock.

The formations here resemble a frozen wave of stone. Bands of white, red, and orange sandstone twist through the landscape, forming intricate patterns and strange shapes that feel almost otherworldly. Every small rise reveals another cluster of sculpted formations, making it the kind of place where simply wandering across the sandstone often reveals something beautiful just beyond the next ridge.

Although White Pocket has become increasingly well known among photographers, it still feels remote and quiet compared to many famous Southwest destinations. The experience here is less about reaching a particular landmark and more about exploring a remarkable landscape at your own pace. It is an ideal place for an awe walk, where the goal is simply to move slowly through the sandstone and take in the extraordinary patterns and shapes around you.

Like nearby Buckskin Gulch, The Wave, Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch and Edmaier's Secret, White Pocket showcases the extraordinary sandstone geology that makes the Vermilion Cliffs one of the most fascinating landscapes on the Colorado Plateau.

Things to Know

Difficult access: Reaching White Pocket requires driving deep into sandy backcountry roads within the Vermilion Cliffs region. A high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle and sand driving experience are required.

Guided tours are common: Because of the difficult driving conditions, many visitors reach White Pocket with a guide. This is often the safest and most practical option.

• Not a traditional hike: Once you arrive, exploring White Pocket involves easy wandering across the sandstone rather than following a specific trail.

• Bring water and sun protection: There is no shade or water in this exposed desert landscape.

• Fragile formations: While the sandstone is durable, the surrounding desert soils are fragile. Try to stay on slickrock or durable surfaces whenever possible.
