Colorful sandstone formations with layered textures and soft curves in Edmaier’s Secret

Edmaier's Secret

Edmaier’s Secret is one of the most unusual sandstone landscapes in the Vermilion Cliffs region. Hidden within a remote side canyon near Buckskin Gulch, this remarkable area is filled with sculpted fins, flowing cross-bedded sandstone, and swirling patterns that appear almost liquid in the changing light. Wandering among these formations feels like stepping into a natural stone labyrinth, where every turn reveals new shapes and textures carved into the rock.

Unlike many destinations that focus on reaching a single viewpoint, Edmaier’s Secret rewards slow exploration. The sandstone fins twist and weave through the landscape, inviting hikers to wander quietly through this maze of stone and discover their own routes among the formations. It is a perfect place for an awe walk, where the goal is simply to move slowly through the landscape and take in the remarkable geology around you.

Despite its beauty, Edmaier’s Secret remains surprisingly quiet compared to nearby Buckskin Gulch. It is not uncommon to have the entire area to yourself, making it an especially peaceful place to explore. For those seeking solitude, sculpted sandstone, and a landscape that feels both playful and otherworldly, this hidden canyon is one of the most memorable places in the Vermilion Cliffs.

Things to Know

• Permit required: A day-use permit is required for this area. It is best to obtain your permit online in advance, as there is usually no cell service at the trailhead.

• Extremely fragile landscape: The sandstone fins and swirling formations are delicate and easily damaged. Walk carefully and try to stay on sand, slickrock, or existing footprints whenever possible.

• Off-trail exploration: There are no official trails through the formations. Part of the experience is wandering and exploring the landscape.

• A great option when Buckskin Gulch is muddy: After storms, Buckskin Gulch can become muddy or hold standing water. Because Edmaier’s Secret sits on dry sandstone above the wash, it can be a great alternative when conditions in the canyon are less ideal.

• Remote desert conditions: There is no shade or water here. Bring plenty of water and be prepared for intense sun during warmer months.

• Access: Edmaier’s Secret is typically reached while hiking from the Buckskin Gulch trailhead and makes an excellent side exploration along the route.
