Cape Royal
Located at the very end of the North Rim’s scenic drive, Cape Royal is a short, easy walk to some of the most spectacular panoramic views in the Grand Canyon. It’s also one of the most popular stops on the North Rim, so you might not have total solititude, even though I have stood alone at many of the viewpoints on holiday weekends.
The paved trail passes Angels Window, a huge natural opening in the limestone with a glimpse of the Colorado River far below, before continuing to Cape Royal and its sweeping views across the canyon.
Accessible Trail: Cape Royal offers a paved, wheelchair-accessible path with minimal elevation change, making its spectacular North Rim views accessible to visitors of varying mobility levels.
Don't Miss the Other Side of the Parking Lot
Before you leave, cross to the opposite side of the parking area, where you'll find a picnic area and the Cape Royal wedding site overlooking the canyon.
Oddly enough, in the 6 or 7 times I've visited (almost all on holiday weekends) this area has always been deserted. The canyon views are stunning, and it's absolutely worth the short wander over. Bring a picnic, enjoy the quiet, or just take a few minutes to explore before heading back down the scenic drive.
And I have to say, if I ever marry again, I think I'd want my ceremony overlooking the Grand Canyon.

Things to Know
Vault toilets and a large parking area are available at the trailhead.
Picnic tables are nearby.
There is no drinking water at the trailhead, so bring your own.
Cape Royal is the end of the beautiful 23-mile Cape Royal Road, so the drive itself is part of the experience.
This trail was unaffected by the 2025 North Rim fire, making it one of the area’s best hiking options while portions of the park continue to recover.
