Grand Wash narrow canyon walls sandy wash Capitol Reef National Park Utah

Grand Wash

A wide, towering canyon that gradually narrows into deeper sections, offering one of the easiest ways to experience Capitol Reef’s sculpted landscape. Grand Wash is flat, approachable, and flexible—whether you’re stepping in for a short walk or exploring deeper into the canyon.

The Experience

Grand Wash is less about reaching a destination and more about moving through the canyon itself. Starting from Highway 24, you can drop directly into the wash and quickly find yourself surrounded by tall, sheer walls. Within minutes, the road noise fades and the canyon begins to close in.

From the Scenic Drive side, the experience builds more gradually. The drive itself winds through wider canyon walls before narrowing, leading to a more immersive approach on foot. This direction adds a sense of transition—from open desert into something more enclosed.

The walking is easy and mostly flat, making it one of the most accessible ways to experience a deep canyon in the park. While it can be busy, the scale of the walls and the shifting light keep it engaging the entire way.

Don’t Miss…

Continue far enough into the canyon to reach the narrower sections, where the walls rise higher and the space begins to feel more enclosed.

Easy, flat canyon walk with towering walls and flexible access from both ends.
